Vietnam finishes second at ASEAN University Games

Web.HCYU.24/12/2012. Vietnam finished runners-up at the nine-day 16th ASEAN University Games (AUG) in Vientiane, Laos from December 12 to 20, taking home a total of 56 gold, 35 silver and 28 bronze medals (Nhan Dan Online).

Track and field events were the most productive for Vietnam at the Games with 14 gold, three silver and six bronze medals, followed by taekwondo, producing eight golds, three silvers and four bronzes.

Malaysia took overall first place with a total of 190 medals comprising 60 golds, 48 silvers and 72 bronzes, while Thailand claimed third place with 45, 52 and 56 respectively.

Hosts, Laos ended up in fifth position at this year’s competition, winning a total of 32 gold, 35 silver and 46 bronze medals.

The 16th AUG saw competitors from 11 Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Timor Leste and Laos, battle it out for 194 sets of medals in 17 event.

Vietnamese athletes competed in 12 disciplines namely track and field, pencak silat, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, karate, sepak takraw, muay, judo, women’s football and volleyball.
