While accompanying his cousin on marketing trips around the country, Giang witnessed the poverty and hardship of locals in remote areas and he promised himself that he would provide help when he returned.

This wasn’t just simple emotion, as he has kept his promise.

Giang created a Facebook to call for donations from his friends and other people to distribute to the poor. Most of the gifts include warm clothes, blankets, cakes and food.

On weekends and other off days, he brought the gifts to the recipients in person.

After about a year, a charity group named “Volunteer for Community” was set up with Giang as the leader to keep on giving necessities to the remote communities.

Giang said he has been obsessed with the hardship of people in remote localities of the northern provinces of Thanh Hoa, Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Ha Giang and Lao Cai.

“I am poor but they are still much poorer than me. They have been suffering deprivation. My sympathy is for children stuck in simple clothes in biting gales of wind. Young boys and girls aged 9-10 years in bare feet carry boxes of corn 20km to sell for money to buy salt and other dried food,” said Giang – a native of northern Hai Duong Province.

“I promised them I will return and have some help for them,” he recalled.

After telling his stories to his parents, they gave him over a million dong (US$48) and he rushed to Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi to buy hundreds of socks. The goods were given to a bus driver for delivery.

Now, the “Volunteer for Community” group has 44 members.

They sometimes receive calls from their friends and relatives who donate clothes or money and ask them to deliver the items to the needy.

Every weekend, the members meet at Chua Do (Red Pagoda) in Ha Dong District in Hanoi to sort clothes and transport them to the Ba La residential area, where a policeman has offered a warehouse to store donations.

At Ba La, the clothes are washed and ironed before being packaged for delivery.

The members also ride bicycles to give warm clothes to homeless and needy people in poor areas in Hanoi when it gets cold.
The “Volunteer for Community” group also works with other voluntary groups to prepare rice and soup for poor patients in Hanoi’s hospitals.
