ASEAN Conference for Young Scientists 2019

Science, technology and innovation have always been the fundamental strengths for national development. In the wave of digital economy and the Industrial Revolution 4.0, the youth and young intellectuals with the ability to adapt and adopt new technology are the driving force in nation building and future shaping of a region.

In the framework of ASEAN youth cooperation and ASEAN Science and Technology cooperation, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union works hand in hand with the Ministry of Science and Technology to host the ASEAN Conference for Young Scientists 2019 in Hanoi (01-05 December 2019) under the theme "Science, Technology and Innovation for a Sustainable ASEAN Community".

The ASEAN Conference for Young Scientists 2019 is one of the key activities in preparation for a series of events for the youth and young intellectuals in 2020 when Vietnam holds the ASEAN chairmanship.

The conference is also an official event in the operating mechanism of the Young Southeast Asian Scientists Network recognized by the ASEAN Science and Technology Commission. At the same time, the event brings the ASEAN Youth Action Plan 2020 into reality.

The activities are scheduled as follows: (1) Opening ceremony with opening remarks from His Excellency Mr. Le Quoc Phong, Alternative Member of Parliament, Chairman of National Committee on Youth of Viet Nam, First Secretary of the Central Youth Union; His Excellency Mr. Kung Phoak, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community; His Excellency Mr. Le Xuan Dinh, Deputy Minister of Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology; Professor Doctor Pham Thanh Huy, President of Phenikaa University; (2) Plenary session: “The Role of Science and Technology in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals”; (3) Panel discussions on (3.1) Environmental protection and climate change; (3.2) Initiatives and recommendations from young scientists to develop science, technology and innovation in ASEAN; (4) Science leadership program for young scientists; (5) Cultural and arts visits in Hanoi.

The plenary sessions and panel discussions draw the attention of 140 young intellectuals from Vietnam and ASEAN. In particular, 45 young scientists will participate in the ASEAN Science Leadership Program.

Under the theme “Science, Technology, and Innovation for a Sustainable ASEAN Community”, the ASEAN Conference for Young Scientists 2019 provides opportunities for young scientists to share knowledge, exchange ideas and propose initiatives on how to address regional challenges. The conference also serves as a bridge between young Vietnamese scientists and distinguished global science networks such as the Global Young Scientists Academy, ASEAN Young Scientists Network and the World Academy of Sciences

In recent times, the Ministry of Science and Technology has issued many policies regarding better treatment towards young talents in science such as the Decision No. 40/2014/NĐ-CP dated December 5th, 2014 or Decision No. 87/2014/NĐ-CP dated September 9, 2014 on calling Vietnamese citizens overseas and foreign specialists for science and technology projects in Vietnam.

The second Global Young Vietnamese Intellectuals Forum 2019 (26-28 November) organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union was another great success in the series of events for the youth and young intellectuals. The forum themed “Young Vietnamese Intellectuals for the Goal of National Sustainable Development” attracted 130 Vietnamese intellectuals from around the globe.

The conference receives active support from Phenikaa University through the Phenikaa Innovation Fund; the Singapore Youth Council through the Singapore - ASEAN Youth Foundation; the ASEAN Young Scientists Network and businesses such as VinGroup and Vietravel.
